Some years ago, I went on a trip with my family to the Canadian Rockies. I had seen videos of pikas on youtube but we were so excited to see them in person in their natural habitat. Pikas are furry, round, rabbit-like animals who want the same things we want: safety, food, love. As we hiked around, we could hear them calling to each other…in this artwork, I reimagine these calls as exchanges from different perspectives. Having difficult dialogues is not always comfortable, especially now given how divided the country feels. Using a sense of humor and repetition, this piece is meant to encourage listening and patience…or simply agreeing to disagree. Unfortunately pikas are vulnerable to climate change.
