Mural Public Art
Our Mural program fosters art accessibility at the intersection of public space and mural artists from around the world.
The 2D (mural) Program lies at the center of one of the Avenue Concept’s core beliefs that art should be accessible to everyone. Starting in 2013 with “The Bee” on Manton Avenue, the 2D Program has since seen the installation of numerous large scale permanent murals and dozens of other smaller rotating murals. We have collaborated with local Rhode Island artists as well as internationally sought after muralists. By working together with both groups we believe that we not only help expose the artists to a wider audience but also help create exposure for Lil’ Rhodey.
Murals are a perfect way to tell stories and reach a vast audience at the same time. Murals can stop people in their tracks to see the story of a young Cambodian girl in a forest, or an artist confronting his fears with a pink party shark, or a larger than life portrait honoring and celebrating contemporary Indigenous people and their Elders.
The Avenue Concept is committed to nurturing this art form and not only investing in the artists but also the infrastructure that is needed to create these murals. Countless hours go into the organization, logistics, and general brainstorming to get these ideas off the ground and onto a wall. But once these stories become part of the cityscape it becomes clear they are well worth the effort.
