Call for Walls
The Avenue Concept offers world class, white glove public art production services to artists and patrons of large-scale public art projects. In the last few years we have gotten many requests from Rhode Island landlords who want to learn about our process, and how they can pursue public art on their walls. In partnership with the City of Providence, we are now able to invite wall-owners to participate in the RIPPLES Project; Mural.
Ripples Project; Murals, an initiative for connecting wall owners The Avenue Concept, the cities leading producers of Public Art Murals.
In the spring of 2025 we are looking to partner with six wall-owners throughout Providence interested in participating in our Ripples Project; Murals. The Ripples Project; Murals is a unique opportunity for wall-owners to get a TAC curated mural created, with the costs of production funded by the City of Providence. The Avenue Concept has a proven track-record of excellently producing public art and experiences, and are excited to offer this service to owners who may not traditionally be able to afford the mural art creation and production cost.
For the Ripples Project we prioritize walls that are:
- Targets for unpermitted painting.
- In high visibility areas.
- Located in an area that does not have existing TAC produced public art pieces.
- Owned by owners that are open minded and excited about receiving a complimentary piece of art by working with TAC, a trusted and experienced producer and curator of public art murals.
Ripples Project; Murals is exclusively available for owners of walls located within Providence City Limits.
Requirements
Owner Requirements
TAC has many years of successful public art production under its belt, and we work with owners who understand that:
- The curatorial process for artist selection and mural design/content creation falls to TAC, the Selection Committee and/or the selected artist, and not the building owner.
- Will be invited to share preliminary thoughts or in process feedback, and then will be excited to take a step back and allow us to guide artists in the creation of a final public art piece.
- Public art represents different perspectives and styles. We work best with owners who are excited to embrace a mural of diverse stylistic direction/theme/content that they will be liberated from directing.
- Ex. a mural might be stylistically informed by a curated graffiti-aesthetic.
If you are the owner of a wall who is interested in participating in the Ripples Project; Murals, then read on and submit your specifications, below.
Wall Requirements
There are also some physical requirements that the walls themselves have to meet.
Physically, the wall in question needs to:
- Be roughly 10 x 60 feet or ca. 600 sq ft (multiply building height x width = square footage).
- Have a smooth surface – Ideally with no repairs needed. TAC has a preference for working on walls made with cinder block or smooth stucco.
- Have clear line of sight and minimum obstructions – windows, trees/vines, parked cars, dumpsters, power lines, etc should be avoided
- Wall allows for painting production, ie ability to set up ladders, movable scaffolding, lifts
- Location/Visibility – Wall is embedded within the fabric of the neighborhood, is seen by many in the community
- Location has direct access to water, a bathroom, materials storage and parking
