Jellyfish in the Cosmos

Jellyfish are the only thing I don’t hate about water. I hate swimming, feeling wet, the temperature difference, and not being able to breathe. My hatred is so deep that I don’t even like taking showers, but you kind of have to do that. I’m scared of water. My worst fear is being on a boat in the middle of the ocean. I may have watched Titanic a little too young.

When I visited the New England Aquarium, I found jellyfish to be the only tolerable part. They appear as if there’s no intention to hurt you, as if they only intend on functioning. I wish I knew more about jellyfish. They’re a lot like plants, but in animal form. I think I’m drawn to jellyfish because they’re unworldly. They blur binaries. I fear the unknown and open spaces. In space and underwater, there’s both nothing and everything. There’s no way of knowing all that’s out there.
