La Broa: Con Nosotros te DisFrutas

The front of the box depicts two figures in a moment of rest and connection, sharing pieces of watermelon while sitting amongst hibiscus flowers. This scene celebrates nourishment, resilience, and the spirit of community. On the opposite side, we’ve featured a late Victorian house inspired by the many colorful houses found in the West End and along Elmwood Ave. Just beyond its wide porch and open front door lies a doormat that reads “Bienvenido”, welcoming the viewer to Broad Street. The imagery just inside the door is a snapshot of the street beyond, reflecting the diverse roots of the neighborhood and its residents with specific nods to the South Side Latinx community. The remainder of the box features plants native to the Caribbean (specifically, the flamboyán from Puerto Rico), chickens resting outside of their coop, and a flag of the Dominican Republic hanging proudly from one of the windows.

We wanted the box to represent the sense of home and enjoyment that can be found along La Broa, as well as the shared values of joy and solidarity that define the neighborhood, through our depictions of familiar New England architecture, tropical produce and flora, and people enjoying a moment of togetherness.
