The Ripples Project

About the Ripples Project

The Ripples Project is a citywide public art initiative by The Avenue Concept in collaboration with the City of Providence Mayor’s Office and the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism. Over the next two years, this initiative will transform Providence with 50 utility box murals and 3,600 square feet of new wall art—building joy, connection, and creative capacity across the city.

Ripples brings together youth, emerging, and experienced artists through partnerships with community-based organizations. By providing training, mentorship, and professional opportunities, the project helps develop the next generation of public artists while investing in inclusive cultural expression and a stronger creative workforce.

Founded in 2012, The Avenue Concept is Rhode Island’s leading public art organization, with over 300 projects completed and $2 million invested in art and infrastructure. Our mission is to curate and produce bold, inclusive public art that inspires joy, dialogue, and community.

As part of Ripples, we’re painting 50 utility boxes throughout Providence—small-scale, high-impact murals that offer artists visibility and a platform to grow. Artists receive hands-on training in safety, technique, and working in public space—supporting long-term career development in the arts.

Participating artists include:

— 13 selected through a public open call

— 14 youth artists in collaboration with New Urban Arts

— A curated group of 15 experienced artists and community members

This inclusive model brings together creativity, mentorship, and professional growth—expanding access to public art and building a more vibrant, equitable city.

Meet the Utility Box Artists

Artifakt Studios

Ryan's work explores the raw, gritty textures of the urban sprawl, mixed with the vibrant, polychromatic landscape of psychedelia, creating a vast dichotomy that emulates the thin veil separating reality from imagination. He is constantly experimenting and evolving his creative process with new techniques and styles, embracing a fusion of organic and digital mediums, while utilizing tools both new and old. Ryan's pursuit is to make art more interactive, inclusive and accessible, dissolving boundaries between artist and spectator. He believes in radical self expression as a human birthright, and encourages creativity as a therapeutic practice essential to a happy, healthy life.

Ervin Figueroa

I’ve been drawing and painting for a long as I can remember, it’s been a passion of mine that has remained consistent through my years. Although I mainly study typography I’m very big on comic book and manga art. I hope to inspire those who come after me to express their selves through color and design.
